Samara Behler in Spokane,WA for her Relocation Guide from a Local

Spokane Relocation Guide from a Local

In Spokane, we are spoiled by our amazing non-profit destination organization that covers the Spokane region; Visit Spokane. They have put together a comprehensive Visitor’s Guide and Relocation Guide for newbies to our area. And, they partner with quality local businesses (like me!) to get community members off to a great start when they visit or move to Spokane. While these resources are amazing, at times they can be so extensive that they are a tad overwhelming.

If you’re planning to move to Spokane or just getting settled in I’ve created this Spokane relocation guide for YOU.  Even if you're just visiting Spokane for a long weekend, this guide could be useful! Think of it as the SparkNotes of the visitor and relocation guides with a born-and-raised perspective. The following includes information on my favorite Spokane neighborhoods, Spokane's bragging rights, innovative and iconic Spokane restaurants, Spokane as a basecamp for nearby attractions, information on Spokane weather and helpful links to basic Spokane resources such as educational institutions, medical facilities and more. This post is meant to simplify comprehensive Spokane relocation information down to a 10 minute read so you can get the basics and get going!

Bragging Rights

Spokane’s recognition as one of the 100 Best Places to Live in the US in 2022 underscores the appeal that we locals understand. Some of my favorite things to brag about when talking about Spokane are the following:

Mid-Century Architecture

Offering a nostalgic charm with modern amenities. Spokane, Washington, is home to a remarkable collection of mid-century modern architecture and celebration of it.  Between Spokane Historic Preservation Office and Mid-Century Spokane and Spokane Preservation Advocates, there is a true love for mid-century architecture in Spokane! Characterized by clean lines, large windows, and a harmonious blend with nature, these structures exemplify the era's aesthetic and functional principles. Notable commercial buildings include the Parkade and the Riverfalls Tower. Many residential neighborhoods also feature these distinctive homes, contributing to Spokane's architectural diversity.  Here are some of my favorite mid-century homes in Spokane.

These mid-century modern homes come on the market from time to time and are always highly sought after. Check out this charming mid-century home that I helped a family sell - stunning!

Loved the light in this mid-century charmer!

Fabulous, Locally-owned Coffee Shops

I could talk for days about our vibrant coffee culture! We have so many cozy and trendy cafes. Here is a quick list of my favorite locally-owned places:

  • Indaba Coffee Locations in West Central, Kendall Yards, Downtown and North Monroe. Head here for modern spaces and impeccable brews with a focus on community. Can’t get enough? Sign up for their subscription service!
  • Atticus Coffee & Gifts  Located in Downtown, Spokane, WA. Coffee and tea in a cozy atmosphere. Enter off Howard St. and walk through a beautifully curated gift shop before ordering coffee in the back.
  • Rocket Bakery  Locations in Garland District, Millwood (off N. Argonne), Lower South Hill and two locations Downtown. A Spokane legacy, since 1992 Rocket bakery has been serving espresso and scratch-baked goods across Spokane. Each location varies slightly, but all have some sampling of their pastries and more.
  • Ladder Coffee Roasters  Locations in Brownes Addition, North Monroe Street and Spokane Valley. Clean spaces with thoughtfully made coffee offerings. You think you come for the coffee, but you keep coming back for that avocado toast!
  • First Avenue Coffee  Located in Downtown, Spokane, WA. A large, clean space, you’ll find many remote workers and meetings happening here. Originally opened by Roast House Coffee legend Deb Di Bernado, they have a knack for intentional specialty drinks, rich brews and cheeky marketing.
  • The Shop  Located in the Perry District. Quaint, quirky and SO Perry District. This beloved neighborhood gem offers unique baked goods alongside your choice cup of brew. You’ll likely find regulars chatting here. This place is no fuss and all charm.
  • New Love Coffee  Locations in Liberty Lake, North Spokane & Kendall Yards. Last but definitely not least, New Love Coffee blends our PNW desire for the perfect coffee in a tidy, modern space, without being overly sophisticated or stuffy. Their staff is friendly, and I’ve found their locations to be great meeting spaces!

Can you tell I'm a coffee person?!
