9+ Features That Make Spokane, WA a Family-Friendly City

As a kid growing up in Spokane, I sincerely overlooked the features that make Spokane, WA such a family-friendly city. But, now working with so many families, what strikes me most isn’t just the charm of Spokane — it is how natural family-oriented life here feels. Spokane isn’t huge, but it’s big enough to offer city variety and small enough to feel like home. Whether you’re exploring neighborhoods with your kids or heading out for outdoor adventures, there’s a lot that makes this area incredibly family-friendly. Here are 9+ features I love about Spokane that make it perfect for families…

Great Family-Friendly Neighborhoods

One of the first things I fell in love with about Spokane is the diverse and welcoming neighborhoods that cater to families of all sizes and lifestyles.

From the peaceful streets of Indian Trail to the character-rich blocks of South Hill and the park-friendly communities in Spokane Valley, you’ll find a variety of family-centric options across the city.

Neighborhoods Just Minutes from Downtown

A big advantage here is that you don’t have to choose between calm, family-friendly living and city convenience.

Neighborhoods like Downriver, Audubon, Cliff Cannon, Rockwood, Perry District, Manito, Comstock, Kendall Yards, Emerson Garfield, Chief Gary and Eagle Ridge sit 10 minutes or less from downtown Spokane and offer lush parks, playgrounds, and quiet streets — all while keeping you close to the restaurants, events, and culture of the city center.

Access to Gardens & Green Spaces

If being outdoors with your family matters, Spokane is a dream. There are so many gardens and green spaces within city limits to access on a daily basis. From Riverfront Park to Manito Park, the city is filled with scenic greenery, play areas, and picnic spots—perfect for everyday exploration.

Beyond everyday adventures, Spokane is a gateway to year-round outdoor fun. Family-friendly hikes like Rocks of Sharon, and the paved Centennial Trail are just minutes away. Spokane is also a great jumping off point for a lot of additional outdoor activities. From the lakes of North Idaho, 5+ ski hills within 1.5 hours, ample hiking and backpacking trails within an hour or two, and even agricultural spaces both north and south of town. You’ll have outdoor fun every season.

Affordability with Access to Amenities

One of Spokane’s biggest advantages is its affordability — especially compared to major West Coast markets. In Spokane, families can enjoy the space, comfort, and access to nature they want at prices that are still within reach — all while benefiting from amenities often found in much larger cities.  Spokane was recently named one of the Top Home-Buying Hot Spots to Watch in 2026 by the National Association of REALTORS®, thanks to its balanced pricing, growth potential, and strong appeal among buyers seeking more value without sacrificing lifestyle.

Even though Spokane feels like a smaller city, you’re never far from the essentials. Shopping, grocery stores, libraries, hospitals, and entertainment venues (with great shows!) are all close by — and parking is easy, too.
